I like this one alot, because of the people. There may not be alot of talent on any given night, and Mike, the host, is a bit silly, but its a good night in a relaxed safe environment.
t (6/2008): Very supportive and respectful people here. first timers are celebrated and encouraged. very cool vibe, very talented individuals, great space.
aaron (1/2008): I called today (Sunday 2007 Aug 18) and they said that Wednesday night is not for comedy because their comedy open mic night is Thursday.
Stuart Taylor (8/2007): Open mic for poetry, spoken word, performance, monologues, and other theatrical acts. There is some music, singing and comedy, tho it is predominately a spoken word and theatrical performance house. There is some high quality music and comedy tho. All poets welcome: Performance poets, less performance oriented poets, hip-hop poets, free-form, free-style, improvisational, theatrical poets. Collaboration is loved whether it is music (or a beatboxer) backing up to spoken word, two or more poets on stage together, or a short tight theatrical scene/sketch. Best way to know what to expect is go to velvetguerilla.com and read the blog for flavors of past shows, and/or speak with the host. The host, Michael, makes himself very available for questions and encouragement. 1st timers who have never performed on stage get to pick their time slots! And newcomers to the show are loved and treated well, with consideration.
