Boca Raton, FL

i've been out of the country for almost 3 years and i gotta say i'm just glad to find there are still open mic operating under the same format as when i left. Cover charges, drink minimums, whatever. at least you can do more then one song and the stage isn't dominated by the bar owner who's just doing the open stage as his own personal showcase of warn out covers.

Yuri (Ira?),

It's unlikely you'll order only hot tea. You'll probably get beer, too, so add an unexpected (if you're a first-time visitor) $3.00 entertainment fee PER HEAD, and manditory tip (on TOP of the entertainment fee), and your evening of AMATEUR entertainment, mostly middling, and brash, pushy waitstaff, is more money than it's worth. Although now, they're charging a door fee, so either way, you have to pay for what you can get free at many other places. You can plead that it's located in Boca Raton, where nothing comes cheap, but its proximity to FAU indicates the ownership is stingy and insensitive to the limited finances of potential student visitors.

The last guy pissed me off. First of all Ira sold the Funky Buddha, the place is under new ownership and they have made some awesome changes. Second, I am good friends with the new owners and they are anything but "stingy". They had to institute a $3 cover charge at the door because of people like you who pay 3 bucks, cry about it and then spend 5 hours sitting at a table drinking free tap water. This a likely reason that the waitstaff was short with you. The Funky Buddha is a small, intimate, awesome place that is not a flop house. They are running a business and if you are taking up a seat that could be used by a customer who wants to eat something or enjoy a drink then I can't blame them for being "brash" or "pushy" with you. Sorry Mr. Pink, but you sound like a tight wad, complaining about $3 bucks and having to tip waitresses. Believe it or not,the Lynn & FAU students have $3 for entertainment AND they can afford to TIP all in the same night.

To all you "winers" about… "oh it costs me 8 bucks… I am a college student… wahhhhhhh wah wahhhhhh!" GROW UP!!!!!! This is a business not some hipppie commune. There are plenty of places in America to "play and listen to music" for free!!!! Post your songs on Youtube… stand on a street corner… But you're going there cause you CRAVE an audience and a crowd… and well… they deliver. Who's paying for the lights, power, water, rent, staff!?!?!?? Not you… if you sit around for hours sipping water taking up their SPACE(yes they are paying for THAt too… its called RENT!). I think Renda says it best: "Support the scene or there will be no scene to support." If 8 dollars is too much to spend for their time and space… then you are not the right crowd for a business that SHOLD apeal to mature individuals anyways. I'd rather see LESS crowded places with people supporting the place financially than an over-crowded place of unapreciative dead-beats leaving a MASSIVE carbon footprint with no financial accountabilty for THIER actions. "Am I buggin' ya? Sorry… didn't mean to bug ya!"

The cover was 3 bucks when I was there. Add 3.50 for a hot tea and a little more for tip and I was out of there for like 8 bucks. If you don't have 3 dollars to spend on a full night of great entertainment then you are definitely down on your luck.

The list isn't full before sign up. BUT… you better get there at 7pm when they open because there are people staking out the place waiting for Renda to show up with the sign up list… last wednesday it went to 2:30 am… The service was good when I was there and the beer selection is insanely great.

They charge a cover, which is BS. The place gets packed but it's so small you don't have anywhere to sit and you get no service. Plus the list is usually full before sign up happens, which leads me to beleive people call in their spots. Cool Hookas though!
